Caerphilly Project Report

A large earthworks, stabilisation and rolling dynamic compaction project on Colliery Spoil material to enable the construction of a major factory.

Design

DGS was contracted to design and construct a piling mat and permanent works solution for a new factory in Caerphilly, Wales.

The works were on an unusual colliery spoil soil and incorporated soil stabilisation, intelligent earthworks and a large rolling dynamic compaction process.

Process

DGS’ works began in the challenging conditions of a Welsh December.

The tight programme saw the utilisation of an RDC convoy to double the speed of the compaction process over the large site.  This coupled with the use of GPS controlled earthworks equipment saw the works executed faster than previously thought possible.

DGS’ speed and the managed gradual handover process allowed the superstructure works to begin while earthworks, stabilisation and compaction were ongoing.
